Abstract
Recently developed, flexible plastic Karman cannula was used in the termination of .710 cases of early pregnancy who requested induced abortion at the Family Health Clinic of Seoul National University, College of Medicine, in order to observe the effectiveness of the cannula when used in the termination of early pregnancy.
Weeks from the last menstrual period ranged from 5 to 12 and those belonging to 6 weeks or less from, LMP rated 22.5 per cent. Among these patients 6 weeks or less from LMP, 31.3 per cent were proved non-pregnant macroscopically, indicating that one-third of the menstrual regulation was unnecessary.
During the procedure, anesthesia was not needed in the majority of cases and Trilene inhalation was needed in 5. 9 percent of the total. The incidence of anesthesia needed increased with the weeks from LMP.
On completion of the uterine aspiration, uterine cavity was. explored in all the cases with a small metal curette to be sure, that it is indeed empty. Of patients 7 weeks or less from LMP, aspiration was complete in more than 90 per cent, however, incomplete aspiration was detected in 21. 6 percent of. 8 weeks group and in 42. 6 per cent of 9-12 weeks group, suggesting that the use of Karman cannula in the termination of pregnancy up to 7 weeks might be ascepted as a routine.
Serious complication during or after the procedure was not encountered in this ¢¥study. Overall complication rate was 3.8 per cent. This, includes 0.4 percent of cervical injury, caused by toothed tenaculum,1.4 per cent of severe nausea and/or -vomiting during 7 the procedure, 1. 1 per cent of mild pelvic infection and ¨Ï. 7 .percent of persistent bleeding. exceeding the usual amount of menstrual flow. One case of ectopic pregnancy was also included.
